Priests Sent To Minister To A World In Desperate Need

Priests Set Apart by God

Priests were people set apart by God to guide and shepherd his people. One entire tribe of the 12 original tribes were tasked with this job. The Levites were descendants of Levi, one of the 10 sons of Jacob (the other two were Manasseh and Ephraim, sons of Joseph).

Read: Malachi 2:1-9

“And now, you priests, this warning is for you.  If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honor my  name,” says the LORD Almighty,
“I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.
“Because of you I will rebuke your descendants ; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it.  And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi may continue,” says the LORD Almighty.

God’s Covenant

“My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.
“For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the LORD Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth. But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,” says the LORD Almighty.
“So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.”

No Inheritance For The Priests

The Levites were not granted land when God delivered the Israelites to the promised land. Instead, they were to tend the temple and ensure that God’s laws were kept. They were keepers of the law. In the reading, God rebukes the Levites because they have failed to keep His law. He sends them this warning so that He may keep His promise to the Levites. He tells them they have shown partiality in the law.

Jesus by His death has become the high priest for all mankind. He became the once for all sacrifice for our sins. If He is in us and we are in Him, and we are his followers, then we are priests under Him. We are to keep God’s law, and shepherd His people, and as prophets, spread His word.

Are You Fulfilling Your Priestly Duties?

Are you keeping His covenant? Have you kept His law, and are you spreading His word?

“For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.” – Malachi 2:7

God’s Promise

God’s Promise is Eternal

I used to think God would abandon me in times when I’d got myself in the most trouble. I never had faith in God’s promises.

When I look back on those thoughts, I see how immature I was in Christ. I’m still a far cry from where I need to be. I see now that God was always with me, guiding me, I was too stubborn to listen.

God never changes. God’s promise to his people never changes. When Israel found themselves slaves to Egypt, they grumbled at their plight, calling to God to fulfill the covenant he had made to bring them to the promised land. In Exodus, God reveals His true nature concerning his promises.

God Fulfills His Promise

Exodus 6:7-8 reads: “I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.”

It did not matter that the Israelites had disobeyed his commands, they would continue to do so for years before this covenant had been fulfilled. God stayed true to His perfect covenant and revealed that though His people can change, He cannot.
