Family is a Gift From God
I just got back from a family reunion this weekend. I always feel happy for a few weeks after one. Family is a gift from God when they function as they should.
“But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” – 1 Timothy 5:8
Family as a Support System
Family is a support system, meant to build a foundation in children, and to provide support whether financially, emotionally, or physically. When a member fails to do this, however, horror stories are born.
I cannot tell you how many people cringe when I tell them excitedly I am going to a family reunion. They ask why I would endure the punishment.
Dealing With Family
I love my family. I am blessed to have them. I’m not sure if my perception of family helps my experience or if they themselves make that much of a difference. To enjoy time with family, you have to stop sweating the small stuff, and pretty much any argument or disagreement between family members is small.
Love Is The Key
Love is the key in dealing with any other person. We must learn to love one another. It is what Jesus commanded us to do.
“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; …” – 1 Corinthians 13:1-13
