How do you love and enjoy God when you can't see Him?

To love and enjoy God, you have to understand that God is not a thought, idea, or some cosmic force. He is a person, he sent his son Jesus, God incarnate, to earth to live and form relationships with His creation. He greatly desires a relationship with us.

Jesus told his disciples, "The one who has seen Me has seen the Father."

Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time without your knowing Me, Philip? The one who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

John 14:9

So to develop a relationship where you love and enjoy God, you have to know Jesus, who is a reflection of His Father.

Obedience is a result of loving and enjoying God

But Jesus died over 2000 years ago, so how do we develop a personal relationship with a dead guy?

Because Jesus is not dead. He did die to pay the consequence for our sin. Sin is simply disobedience to God. In the book of John, Jesus says: "If you love Me, you will keep My commands."

If you love Me, you will keep My commands.

John 14:15

Love and enjoy Jesus

Now it is interesting the order of that statement. It does not say "If you keep my commandments, you love me." Love comes first in the verse, then comes obedience.

But to keep Jesus' commands, you have to know what he commanded. To do this, you should read the Bible, study the Bible, and pray to Jesus. You have to spend time with someone to build a relationship with them, and Jesus is no different.

Why should we love and enjoy God in our lives?

God doesn't merely want our blind devotion or our unwavering obedience. If he did, he wouldn't have given people free will.

The fact that everything is permissible to us shows us that God isn't looking for a robotic response to his unconditional love. In fact, he demonstrated his love by sending Jesus to die for us before we even acknowledged our sin.

“Everything is permissible,” but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything builds up.

1 Corinthians 10:23

Joy in God is our highest duty

In the book of Matthew, Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment is. Jesus summed up all of the commandments in two commands.

He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.

Matthew 22:37-39

Christian Standard Bible

Notice again the order of events in the verse. He did not say love your neighbor first, then love your God. The love of God is foundational, then second then is "like it", loving your neighbor as yourself.

Before you can love your neighbor, you have to love God. Before you can love life in Christ, you have to know Christ. To know Christ requires prayer and Bible reading. Consistent prayer and Bible reading require a commitment and devotion.

All of this starts with a decision. You have to make a choice to stop relying on your own understanding of life to follow Jesus and trust his decisions for you.

Have you made this decision in your life? You may be attending a church or watching services online or on television, but have you stopped and committed to following Christ?

I invite you to make that choice to love and enjoy God today. If you will, say a quick prayer. Ask God to come in to your heart, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you on how you can love and enjoy God by building your prayer life and reading the BIble.
