Are You Pursuing God?

So often, I hear people say that God just isn’t working in their lives. My question when I hear this often is, “Are you pursuing God?”

Start Pursuing God In 10 Easy Steps

What is pursuing God?

Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you. - Matthew 7:7 (CSB)
Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, double-minded people! - James 4:8 (CSB)
I love those who love me, and those who search for me find me. - Proverbs 8:17 (CSB)
Those who know Your name trust in You because You have not abandoned those who seek You, Lord. - Psalms 9:10 (CSB)
The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him. - Lamentations 3:25 (CSB)

Are you truly pursuing God. Do you really want Him to work in your life, or are you avoiding the relationship so you can remain in control?

You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you"-the Lord's declaration-"and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and places where I banished you"-the Lord's declaration. "I will restore you to the place I deported you from." - Jeremiah 29:13-14 (CSB)

Are you seeking God with all of your heart, or do you seek other things with your heart as well?

Search for the Lord and for His strength; seek His face always. - 1 Chronicles 16:11 (CSB)

There are two questions that can help you discover if you are pursuing God with all of your heart.

  1. 1
Where do you spend the majority of your money?
  2. 2
What do you spend the majority of your time doing?
I’m not going to get into the money question here. You know whether you are good with God on what you spend your money on. My main focus will be on your time.
Calling spare time “your time” is uncomfortable to me. I have come to understand that all time is a gift from God. He allows us to exist for a set amount of time on Earth. What we choose to do with it defines who we are and what we love.
Author and pastor J.D. Greear said that quiet time is one of the worst named yet most important practice that we as Christians can do. In fact, I love the schedule he lays out for doing quiet time.
  • 15 minutes of Bible reading
  • 15 minutes of prayer
  • 15 minutes of devotional, Scripture memorization, etc.
From one man He has made every nation of men to live all over the earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live, so that they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. - Acts 17:27 (CSB)
Quiet time is not the only way to be pursuing God though. Another blog I found while researching for this article is written by Marquis Clark. She recommends 10 ways to pursue God.
  1. 1
    Read His Word
  2. 2
    Bible Study
  3. 3
    Get to know Jesus
  4. 4
    Talk To Him
  5. 5
    Seek Him
  6. 6
    Listen To Him
  7. 7
    Ask Others About Him
  8. 8
    Get Involved
  9. 9
    Be Yourself
  10. 10
    Love and Enjoy Him
Over the next few weeks, we’ll cover these more in depth. Throughout my journey with Christ, I have come to understand that life is not a solo mission in which we only rely on our own thoughts, beliefs, and opinions to make it.
God created us for community, and I believe this is why the list from Marquis is resonating so much with me since reading it. While some of the things on the list is a solo effort, all of them involve God, and a few of them employ other people.
